“About four more miles.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On a narrow country road where vehicles regularly sped past at highway speeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Since third grade.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“What grade are you in now?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Fifth.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For two full years this child had been carrying the weight of fear by himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Does your mom know?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ethan immediately grabbed my arm with surprising strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
