I was only four when Frank married my mother.

Not long afterward, she passed away, leaving him with a little girl who wasn’t biologically his.

But Frank never left.

He raised me. Protected me. Walked me down the aisle. Stood beside me at my daughter’s christening. Even after I became an adult, he would still make the apple pancakes I had loved as a child.

To me, he wasn’t my stepfather.

He was my dad.

So when his health suddenly began to fail, I refused to leave his hospital bedside.

One night, the doctor quietly told me Frank had only hours left.

I was holding his hand when his fingers suddenly tightened around my wrist.

“Promise me you’ll listen before you hate me.”

I stared at him.

“I could never hate you.”

His eyes filled with tears.

Then he whispered words that made my entire world stop.

“I’ve lied to you your entire life.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“Everything you believe is false. Your childhood… who I am… all of it.”

I tried to convince myself that the medication was affecting him.

“Dad, this doesn’t make sense. Should I call the doctor?”

Frank shook his head.

“My mind is clear. I need you to discover the truth before I die… even though I was begged to take it to my grave.”

Then he pushed a folded piece of paper into my hand.

“Go there. Now.”

Those were the last words he ever spoke to me.

I ran into the hallway and unfolded the paper.

There was only an address.

It was surprisingly close to the house where I had grown up.

I didn’t understand why Frank had sent me there, but I couldn’t ignore his final request.

Twenty minutes later, I stopped outside an ordinary-looking house.

I walked toward the front door, already preparing an apology for disturbing whoever lived there so late at night.

Then I raised my hand.

Before I could knock…
