Aunt Helen’s hand tightened around the edge of the table.

“They were trying to isolate her,” she said.

“Yes,” Lincoln answered. “And they were preparing Gregory to accept it.”

I stared at the screen.

For months, I had believed Pamela was worried about Matilda.

Now I understood that every worried look, every late-night conversation, every warning had been part of a larger plan.

“We should contact the authorities,” Aunt Helen said.

“We will,” I replied.

But Lincoln raised his hand.

“There’s one more file.”

He opened a video recorded three days earlier in my kitchen.

Pamela sat at the island while Spencer placed several documents in front of her. They spoke quietly, unaware that the system had captured everything.

“We are close,” Pamela said. “A few more incidents and Gregory will stop questioning us.”

Spencer looked down at the papers.

“He does not have to believe every detail,” he replied. “He only has to sign what we put in front of him.”

My stomach tightened.

Then Pamela leaned toward him.

“And once he signs, Matilda won’t be the only one they can call incapable.”

The room fell silent.

Their plan was not only about my daughter.

It included me.

Lincoln paused the recording and enlarged one of the documents on the counter.

My name was printed at the top.

Beneath it was an evaluation claiming I had been examined by a doctor I had never met.

Aunt Helen leaned closer to the screen.

Then her face went pale.

“I know that doctor,” she whispered.

I looked at her.

“He signed Beatrice’s death certificate.”

Suddenly, the truth felt much larger than Pamela and Spencer.

And I knew we were no longer dealing with a family betrayal alone.
