At seventy, I thought I understood what confidence looked like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then I met a woman on the beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I was walking near the water one bright afternoon when I noticed her a short distance away. She looked about my age and wore a colorful swimsuit, a wide smile, and the relaxed expression of someone enjoying a perfect day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At first, I felt uncomfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I had grown up surrounded by unspoken rules about aging. People were expected to become quieter, less visible, and more concerned with what others might think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But she seemed free from all of that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She walked along the shore, letting the wind move through her hair and stopping occasionally to watch the waves. There was nothing performative about her. She was simply happy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I eventually approached her and made a clumsy comment about how unusual it was to see someone our age dressed so boldly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She looked at me for a moment, then smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cLife is too short to spend a beautiful day worrying about strangers\u2019 opinions,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then she continued down the beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I stayed there for a while, watching the waves and thinking about her words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The problem had never been her swimsuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was the old belief I had carried for decades\u2014that growing older meant taking up less space in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That afternoon, I understood something I should have learned long ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Age does not require us to hide, apologize, or abandon the things that make us feel alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Confidence is not about looking a certain way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is about being at peace with who you are and giving yourself permission to enjoy your own life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
