He explained that Walter\u2019s children had challenged aspects of our marriage and some decisions their father had made in his later years. They wanted the circumstances of those decisions examined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWalter knew what he wanted,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThere are professional records concerning his ability to make those decisions,\u201d the adviser replied. \u201cThose questions will be reviewed through the proper process.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then he touched the envelope. \u201cBut that isn\u2019t the main reason I\u2019m here. Walter asked me to give this to you personally after his death.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I looked at my name. \u201cWhat\u2019s inside?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cA letter. An old photograph. And something your husband said he had kept from you for a very long time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I thought I knew Walter so well. I knew how he liked his tea, which record he played when he felt melancholy, and the tiny change in his expression just before he won a chess game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Yet as I held that envelope, I realized there was a part of his past I knew nothing about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I opened it carefully. An old, slightly yellowed photograph slipped onto the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
