\u201cWe\u2019re on an airplane.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She shook her head. \u201cSome of us don\u2019t want to see that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I took a breath. I was exhausted, and her words were beginning to get to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019ll be covered with the blanket. I\u2019m just feeding her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I thought that would end the conversation. Instead, she raised her voice. She said she had paid for a peaceful flight and that I should find somewhere more private. Several passengers turned to look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My face grew hot. I wasn\u2019t ashamed of caring for my daughter. I just hated having an audience while I tried to meet her needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou could go to the bathroom,\u201d the woman suggested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019d rather stay seated and feed her here,\u201d I said calmly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That seemed to annoy her even more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cPeople should think twice before traveling with babies this young.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I looked down at my daughter. She was tired and hungry. After the month we\u2019d been through, all I wanted was to reach my mother\u2019s house and rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then I heard a small voice behind me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Louise was standing in the aisle. I didn\u2019t know how much she had heard. She looked at my face, then at the passenger beside me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDo you want to switch seats with me?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou don\u2019t have to, sweetheart.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI can sit here,\u201d she insisted. \u201cYou\u2019ll have more room to take care of the baby.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I asked if she was sure. She nodded. The woman said nothing, so we traded places. The passenger in my new row immediately shifted over to give me more space. At last, I could feed my baby in peace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I thought the incident was over. Then I looked at Louise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She had taken her tablet out of her bag. I knew that expression: she had an idea. She searched for something, then turned the screen toward the woman. From my seat, I couldn\u2019t see what was on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The passenger studied the screen, and her expression changed almost at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhy are you showing me this?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Louise answered, but the noise of the cabin drowned out her words. The woman looked at the tablet again. She no longer sounded so certain of herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A moment later, she called over a flight attendant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIs there another seat I could move to?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The attendant said the flight was nearly full but offered to check. A few nearby passengers tried to work out what had happened. So did I.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cLouise,\u201d I called. \u201cWhat did you show her?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She turned around, looking perfectly innocent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNothing mean, Mom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Before I could ask another question, the woman stood and followed the flight attendant toward the back of the plane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Louise gave me a small smile. She didn\u2019t seem pleased about embarrassing anyone. She looked as though she had simply reminded an adult of something important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When the baby fell asleep again, I asked about the tablet once more. Louise held it close to her chest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019ll show you after we land.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I knew my daughter wouldn\u2019t insult someone or humiliate them for fun. That only made me more curious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I had no idea that what she had shown the passenger was connected to something she had discovered just days earlier. When I finally saw the screen, I understood why the woman\u2019s attitude had changed so quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
