“There’s a name you should know.”

“Who?”

“Graham Vale. He worked in the clinic’s administration.”

Prescott looked up.

“I remember him. He worked briefly with one of our companies.”

“Did Genevieve know him?” I asked.

“I believe so.”

His answer proved nothing, but it made it even more urgent to piece together what had happened.

I asked Prescott to obtain only the records we were legally entitled to access.

I didn’t want guesses.

I wanted facts.

At the hospital, Jonah was awake.

He was watching a documentary about animals while his sister rested in the bed beside him.

I sat down next to him.

“Dad, you’re here early today.”

“I wanted to see you.”

He studied my face.

“You look worried.”

I tried to smile.

“I have a lot on my mind.”

Jonah pointed toward the door.

“Did you bring someone?”

“Someone who knew your mom.”

He was quiet for a moment.

Then he said something that caught my attention.

“There was also a lady in a green coat who knew Mom.”

I turned toward him.

“What lady?”

“She came to visit when we lived in the other house.”

“Do you remember her name?”

He shook his head.

“She was old. Mom talked to her in the kitchen.”

“And then what happened?”

Jonah lowered his eyes.

“Mom was sad. Then she hugged me really tight.”

I didn’t want to question him any further.

I gently stroked his hair and stayed beside him until he returned his attention to the television.

But I couldn’t stop thinking about what he had said.

Genevieve had received a visitor I knew nothing about.

And that woman seemed to have left her with a painful memory.

Dr. Yates met us in a private room.

He had reviewed the document Elena brought.

“The report is incomplete,” he explained. “We can’t draw medical conclusions from these pages alone.”

“But could it help?”

“Possibly. There are details that deserve a specialist’s review. We’ll need to verify the document and compare it with the children’s current test results.”

“Does that mean their treatment will change?”

“Not without a full medical evaluation. I’ll speak with the specialists and request the original records.”

For the first time in days, I felt there was a clear path forward.

Not a miracle.

Not an instant solution.

Just a chance to better understand what was happening to my children.

That was enough to give me a little hope.

Later, Elena came over to me in the waiting room.

She was holding a small, worn envelope.

“Genevieve asked me to give you this, too.”

I looked at her, surprised.

“Why didn’t you show it to me sooner?”

“She wanted you to read the report first. She said you would only understand why she kept this after you saw it.”

I recognized my wife’s handwriting on the envelope.

It held just one word:

Lawson.

A lump formed in my throat.

I opened it slowly.

Inside was a photograph.

Genevieve stood in front of the old clinic building. She was pregnant and wearing a faint smile, one hand resting on her belly.

Beside her was an older woman in a green coat.

My heart began to pound.

It was the same woman Jonah had described.

But that wasn’t the most startling part.

I knew her face.

I saw her almost every Sunday when I brought flowers to Genevieve’s grave.

She was the caretaker of the small cemetery.

She always greeted me kindly.

Sometimes she even told me how much Genevieve had loved white flowers.

I had never imagined they knew each other.

I turned the photograph over.

On the back, Genevieve had written a short message.

I recognized her handwriting immediately.

“Lawson, ask her who is really buried in the grave you visit.”

I froze.

I read the words again.

Then a third time.

I didn’t know whether it was a warning, a reference to a family secret, or something I wasn’t ready to understand.

But one thing was certain.

The woman I saw every week had known Genevieve long before she disappeared.

And my wife had wanted me to discover it for myself.

I looked at Elena.

“How long have you had this photograph?”

“Since Genevieve gave it to me.”

“Do you know what the message means?”

She hesitated.

“Not entirely. But I think the woman in the photograph can explain what happened.”

I slowly stood up.

I had spent years trying to shield my children from pain, convinced that the past was behind us.

Now two questions wouldn’t let me think about anything else.

What had Genevieve been hiding?

And, more than anything, who was buried in the grave I had mourned at for years?
