By the time the last guests left, I could barely keep my eyes open.
Our wedding day had been beautiful, but long. All I wanted was a few quiet minutes with my new husband before we finally slept.
I had just taken off my earrings when the bedroom door opened.
“Mom isn’t feeling well,” Daniel said. “She needs somewhere quiet to rest.”
Behind him stood his mother, Eleanor, looking unsteady and overwhelmed by the noise downstairs.
“This is our room,” I said carefully.
“Only for a little while,” Daniel replied. “Please don’t make this difficult tonight.”
I did not want our first evening as a married couple to become an argument in front of family. So I took a blanket and went to the sofa in the sitting room.
Sleep never came easily.
I heard muted footsteps in the hallway, the soft closing of doors, and then silence.
Near dawn, I went upstairs to collect my things.
Daniel was asleep on one side of the bed. Eleanor rested on the other, still wearing the cardigan she had arrived in. Nothing about the scene made sense, but it was the object lying between them that stopped me.
On the white sheet was a folded note sealed with a small blue sticker.
My name was written across the front.
I opened it with shaking hands.
Inside was a message from Eleanor:
I am sorry you were pushed aside tonight. I was never ill. Daniel asked me to stay because he was afraid you would find the documents in his study before the wedding.
Beneath the message was a key.
I looked at Daniel, then at the closed study door across the hall.
For months, he had told me that our future was simple, secure, and built on trust.
But as I held that key in my hand, I understood that the first real secret of our marriage had been waiting for me before the first morning even began.
