In January 2025, there were 168,386 named species on the Australian National Species List.^[156] However, it is estimated that 70% of Australian species have not been discovered and classified and that there may be 600,000 Australian native species.^[157] In general, knowledge of vertebrates and flowering plants is better than for invertebrates and fungi. It is estimated that less that 10% of Australia’s fungi and insects have been named.^[157]
