From 1886, Australian colonial governments began removing many Aboriginal children from their families and communities, justified on the grounds of child protection and forced assimilation policies.^[82][83][84] The Second Boer War (1899–1902) marked the largest overseas deployment of Australia’s colonial forces.^[85][86]
