PART 2
Nathan stared at the documents as though they had suddenly become impossible to understand.
For the first time since I had known him, his confidence faltered.
Rain pounded against the emergency room entrance while doctors and nurses stood nearby, uncertain whether they were witnessing an ordinary family dispute or something far more serious.
One of Nathan’s attorneys quickly reviewed the paperwork. His expression changed almost immediately.
“These documents appear to be completely valid,” he admitted quietly.
Nathan slowly turned toward Lucien.
“You planned all of this.”
Lucien showed no emotion.
“I simply made sure she would always have a choice.”
Another contraction tore through my body, so intense that I gripped the edge of the gurney.
Everything around me was beginning to blur.
“Take her in immediately,” Lucien ordered.
The medical team rushed my stretcher through the emergency doors.
Nathan stepped forward.
“She’s my wife,” he protested. “I have the legal right to make her medical decisions.”
Before anyone could respond, Lucien handed a second document to the attending physician.
“The court has already granted her temporary medical protection while this matter is under review.”
Nathan’s face tightened.
“That’s impossible…”
I could barely understand what they were saying.
The contractions were coming faster and faster.
I no longer had the strength to think.

Lucien leaned down beside me.
“Don’t think about him,” he whispered. “Focus only on yourself and the babies.”
The calmness in his voice became the only thing keeping me grounded.
Minutes later, I was surrounded by surgeons, bright operating lights, and voices calling out instructions.
Someone was monitoring the twins’ heartbeats.
A nurse adjusted my oxygen mask.
Everything happened so quickly that I completely lost track of time.
Just before the operating room doors closed, I heard Lucien’s voice one last time.
“You and your babies are going to make it.”
Those were the last words I remembered before the anesthesia pulled me under.
When I finally opened my eyes, the room was silent.
But it wasn’t the heavy silence I had grown used to.
This one felt peaceful.
A nurse noticed I was awake and smiled warmly.
“Welcome back.”
My first thought wasn’t about myself.
“My babies?”
“They’re doing well,” she answered immediately.
“Both of them?”
She nodded with a smile.
“A healthy little boy and a beautiful baby girl. They’re receiving a few precautionary treatments, but they’re both doing very well.”
An overwhelming sense of relief washed over me.
Tears filled my eyes before I could stop them.
For months, Nathan had spoken about the twins as though they were part of a business arrangement… an investment.
Hearing the nurse speak, they finally became what they had always been.
My children.
The nurse gently adjusted my blanket before adding,
“Someone has been waiting outside your room since your surgery ended.”
“Nathan?”
She shook her head.
“No… Mr. Blackwood.”
A few moments later, Lucien walked into the room.
He looked exhausted.
His shirt sleeves were rolled up, and a faint bruise marked his jaw.
He offered me a quiet smile.
“Congratulations.”
I looked at him for a long moment.
“Why did you help me?”
He didn’t answer right away.
“Because someone had to.”
I frowned.
“That’s not the whole truth.”
He let out a quiet sigh before pulling an old photograph from the inside pocket of his jacket.
Without saying a word, he placed it beside me.
I picked it up.
The picture showed two teenagers standing outside a school.
One of them was me.
The other…
I froze for several long seconds before looking back at him.
“That can’t be…”
A faint smile crossed his face.
“You used to call me Eli.”
The memories came rushing back all at once.
The quiet boy from high school.
The one who always believed in me when everyone else doubted me.
The one who disappeared before graduation without ever saying goodbye.
“You vanished…” I whispered.
“My family had to leave overnight,” he replied. “I spent years rebuilding my life.”
“And then… you found me again?”
“I tried.”
His expression darkened.
“But by the time I found you, Nathan had already built a world around you where almost everyone depended on him.”
Before I could respond, a woman entered the room carrying an elegant leather briefcase.
She introduced herself calmly.
“My name is Mara Ellison. I’m your attorney.”
I stared at her in surprise.
“My attorney?”
“Yes. Starting today.”
She opened her briefcase and placed several documents on the bedside table.
“Nathan has already filed an emergency petition requesting temporary custody of the twins.”
My heart tightened.
“I only gave birth a few hours ago…”
“I know,” Mara replied. “That’s exactly why we were prepared.”
She slid another document toward me.
“This was signed years before your marriage.”
I looked at the signature.
It wasn’t my married name.
It was a name I had almost forgotten.
Celeste Vale.
Slowly, old memories began resurfacing.
Years before meeting Nathan, I had attended a free legal workshop where young women were encouraged to establish financial and legal protections before marriage.
I had signed the paperwork without thinking much about it afterward.
When I mentioned it to Nathan later, he simply laughed.
According to him, those documents would never matter.
He had been wrong.
“The trust established under your maiden name is still fully active,” Mara explained.
“It also received private funding to ensure you would always have independent legal protection.”
I looked at Lucien.
“You knew…”
He nodded.
“I made sure those protections remained in place.”
For the first time in years, I realized Nathan had never truly controlled every part of my life.
There had always been one door he could never lock.
Just as hope finally began replacing fear, Lucien’s phone vibrated.
He glanced at the screen.
His expression changed instantly.
“What is it?” Mara asked.
“Nathan is downstairs.”
My heart began racing.
“He didn’t come alone.”
Before anyone could react, footsteps echoed down the hallway.
The door opened.
Nathan walked into the room wearing a perfectly tailored suit, accompanied by his attorneys, several hospital administrators, and his mother.
He wore a flawless smile, as though nothing had happened.
“My love,” he said softly. “You’ve been through such a difficult day.”
I looked directly into his eyes.
And for the very first time…
I wasn’t afraid to meet his gaze.
