Part 1: The Voice No Father Should Ever Hear

“Elias, I don’t want to overstep,” Mrs. Gable said quietly, “but almost every afternoon I hear a young girl crying inside your house.”

I stopped at the front gate, my work keys still in my hand.

After another exhausting day on a construction site, I wasn’t prepared for a conversation like this.

“There must be some mistake,” I replied. “No one’s home during the day.”

She looked at me with genuine concern.

“Then maybe you don’t know what’s happening when you’re gone.”

Those words stayed with me long after I walked inside.

For years, I believed being a good father meant working hard, paying the bills, and making sure my family had everything they needed.

My wife, Rebecca, worked full-time, and our fifteen-year-old daughter, Josephine, spent more and more time alone in her room.

She barely smiled anymore.

She rarely joined us for dinner.

Whenever I asked if everything was alright, she always answered the same way.

“I’m fine.”

I accepted those words because they were easier than asking difficult questions.

Two days later, Mrs. Gable stopped me again.

“I heard her crying today,” she said. “Please… just make sure she’s okay.”

That night I checked on Josephine.

She was sitting on her bed wearing headphones, staring at her phone.

“Everything alright?” I asked.

She forced a small smile.

“Yeah, Dad.”

Something about her answer didn’t feel right.

The next morning, I pretended to leave for work as usual.

After Rebecca drove away and Josephine left carrying her backpack, I quietly returned home through the back entrance.

The house was silent.

I searched every room.

Nothing.

Feeling foolish, I almost left.

Then an unexpected idea crossed my mind.

I hid beneath my own bed and waited.

Nearly half an hour passed before I heard the front door open.

Soft footsteps climbed the stairs.

Someone entered the bedroom.

The mattress sank slightly.

At first, there was only silence.

Then I heard quiet sobbing.

A trembling voice finally whispered,

“Please… stop.”

It was Josephine.

She should have been at school.

Instead, she was sitting on my bed, crying as though she had been carrying a burden far too heavy to face alone.

From beneath the bed, I could only see her shoes as tears fell onto the floor.

Between sobs, she whispered something that made my heart race.

“I won’t let them ruin my life…”

I realized I wasn’t witnessing an ordinary teenage moment.

My daughter had been hiding a painful secret.

And I was about to discover just how long she had been carrying it alone.
