Part 2: I Was Mowing the Lawn When I Heard My Daughter Screaming — Then She Told Me to Check Her Grandmother’s Purse

The scream cut through the sound of the lawn mower.

For a second, I thought something terrible had happened outside.

Then I recognized the voice.

My daughter.

“Dad!”

I dropped the mower and ran toward the house.

The front door was open.

I rushed inside and heard crying coming from Lily’s bedroom.

I pushed the door open.

My mother-in-law, Marlene, was kneeling beside my nine-year-old daughter with one hand covering Lily’s mouth.

My daughter was struggling to get free.

“If you tell Daddy,” Marlene whispered, “your mother won’t wake up next time.”

I pulled her away immediately.

“What are you doing?”

Marlene’s expression changed instantly.

“She’s lying,” she said calmly. “Lily always exaggerates.”

But my daughter was shaking.

Red marks were already visible on her shoulder.

I knelt beside her.

“Lily, tell me what happened.”

Before she could answer, Marlene interrupted.

“She had a tantrum. I was only trying to calm her down.”

I looked at my daughter.

She stared at me for a moment.

Then her eyes moved toward the black purse hanging from her desk chair.

“Dad…”

“I’m listening.”

“Check her purse.”

Marlene suddenly stepped forward.

“Ethan, that’s completely unnecessary.”

I reached the purse before she could grab it.

Inside were ordinary things.

A wallet.

Reading glasses.

Hand lotion.

Tissues.

Then my fingers touched something hidden beneath the lining.

A folded piece of paper.

The moment I pulled it out, Marlene’s face went completely pale.

I unfolded it.

At the top was my wife’s name.

Below it was a hospital stamp from that morning.

There was also a medication schedule written in blue ink.

And beneath that…

A handwritten note from Marlene.

I read it once.

Then again.

My stomach dropped.

Because whatever had happened to my wife that morning…

Marlene had known about it before I did.

And she had just threatened my daughter to keep me from discovering the truth.
