PART 2: A LIFE SHE HAD NEVER IMAGINED
Chela’s little trattoria was nothing like a luxurious restaurant. The tables were simple, the fans sometimes made strange noises, and the menu was handwritten.
But to Mariana, that place represented something far more valuable than comfort: peace.
Here, no one laughed at her when she made a mistake. No one pulled out a phone to record her. No one turned her difficult moments into a spectacle.
For the first time in a long while, Mariana could simply be herself.
She quickly learned how to serve customers, prepare coffee, clean tables, and manage orders. Every day helped her regain a little more confidence.
One evening, a man walked into the trattoria. He looked exhausted and clearly seemed to be searching for somewhere he could catch his breath.
“Excuse me… could you help me?” he asked.
Mariana brought him some water and offered him a chair.
The man’s name was Mateo.
Over the following days, he returned regularly. He always chose the same table and sometimes sat there for several minutes without saying a word.
Then, little by little, a conversation began.
At first, they talked about simple things: the weather, books, and the dishes they liked most.
With time, they began sharing stories about their lives.
Mateo told her that he had worked as a police officer in Mexico City. He had discovered irregularities within his team and tried to speak out about them. But that decision cost him his job and forced him to start over from nothing.
Mariana understood that feeling better than anyone.
She, too, had been forced to rebuild her life without knowing what the next day would bring.
Yet Mateo never asked her to talk about her past.
He never tried to find out why she had moved to another city or why she was using a different name.
He simply respected her silence.
And that respect gave birth to something new inside Mariana: trust.
As the months passed, their friendship became deeper.
Then, without either of them really realizing it, their feelings began to change.
Five years passed.
Mariana now had a small house, a stable job, and people she could truly depend on.
But more importantly, she had found something she once believed she had lost forever: peace of mind.
She no longer lived waiting for a phone call.
She no longer feared that someone would suddenly hold a phone in front of her face.
She no longer felt the need to convince anyone that she deserved respect.
She had simply learned how to live again.
Until one day, everything changed.
One evening, as Mariana returned home, she noticed that her door was slightly open.
She stopped immediately.
Something was wrong.
She stepped inside carefully.
Several drawers were open, and some of her belongings had been moved. The small container where she kept her savings was no longer where she had left it.
Her heart began beating faster.
Then she heard a voice behind her.
“Mariana…”
She froze.
That voice belonged to a chapter of her life she had spent five years trying to leave behind.
She slowly turned around.
Andrés was standing there.
He had changed. His face looked more tired, and the confidence she remembered from him was gone from his eyes.
“How did you find me?” Mariana asked.
Andrés lowered his gaze.
“I hired a private investigator. I searched for you for more than a year.”
Mariana remained silent.
“Why did you come?”
He took a deep breath.
“Because I finally understood something. What we did to you that day wasn’t just a joke.”
Mariana stared at him.
“You left me without money, without documents, and without a phone.”
“I know.”
“And you walked away laughing.”
Andrés said nothing.
This time, he didn’t try to make excuses.
He knew that no explanation could erase what had happened.
After a few seconds, he pulled an envelope from his jacket.
“There’s something else you need to know.”

Mariana opened the envelope.
Inside were several documents concerning an investigation into Julián and Raúl.
Other people had reported similar experiences connected to their videos. Authorities were now trying to determine whether these were isolated incidents or part of a repeated pattern of behavior.
“They may ask you to testify,” Andrés explained.
Mariana remained silent.
“Did you come here to ask me to help them?”
“No. I came so that, this time, you could be the one to decide.”
Those words surprised her.
For years, other people had made decisions for her.
But now, no one could tell her what she had to do.
At that moment, Mateo appeared in the doorway.
Andrés looked at him.
“Who is that man?”
Mariana turned toward Mateo.
Then she looked back at Andrés.
“He’s the man who stayed by my side when you chose to leave.”
Andrés fell silent.
After a few seconds, he whispered:
“You look happy.”
Mariana smiled gently.
“I am.”
Andrés tried to smile too, but his face remained frozen.
That was when he realized that the woman he had abandoned five years earlier was no longer the same.
Mariana had built a life without him.
A life in which she no longer needed his approval.
Mariana held the envelope tightly against her chest.
The past had returned to knock on her door.
But this time, she was no longer the woman waiting for someone else to decide her future.
She had a choice.
She could tell the world what had happened and finally close that chapter…
or she could choose never to look back again.
One thing was certain:
Mariana would never again allow someone else to decide the value of her life.
And this time, whatever decision she made, she would make it for herself.
PART 3: MARIANA’S CHOICE
Mariana remained silent for a few moments, the envelope still in her hands.
She knew telling her story would not be easy. Yet after all those years, she had finally understood one thing: this time, the decision belonged to her.
“I’ll testify,” she finally said.
Andrés looked at her in surprise.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes. I’m not doing it for revenge. I simply want the truth to be known.”
On the day of her testimony, Mariana spoke calmly. She told them what had happened and explained how she had managed to rebuild her life after that terrible day.
When she walked out of the building, Mateo was waiting for her.
“How do you feel?”
Mariana took a deep breath.
“Free.”
Mateo smiled and gently took her hand.
At that moment, Mariana realized that her past would always be part of her story, but it no longer had the power to decide her future.
Andrés had returned looking for the woman he had abandoned five years earlier.
But that woman no longer existed.
Mariana had changed.
She had learned to trust herself, recognize her own worth, and choose the life she wanted for herself.
That evening, she returned to Chela’s trattoria.
Sitting outside the restaurant, she watched the sunset and thought about the young woman who, five years earlier, had run behind a van begging it to stop.
That young woman had been afraid.
But now, Mariana no longer needed anyone to come back and save her.
She had found her own strength.
Mateo sat beside her and took her hand.
Mariana smiled.
She had not forgotten the past.
She had simply stopped allowing it to define her future.
And for the first time, she knew with certainty that the life she had built truly belonged to her.
