“Because sometimes Mommy cries at night when she thinks I’m asleep.”
Mia said it with the innocence of a six-year-old. I wished I could vanish.
My name is Elena Hart. I was a single mother, and for the past two years I had worked at the company of Adrian Kane, a respected executive known for his serious, private nature.
That morning, an unexpected problem left me with no choice but to bring my daughter to the office. I never imagined she would meet my boss and, in front of several employees, ask him if he would be her dad.
Adrian looked at Mia, then turned to the people gathered in the hallway.
“I believe everyone has work to get back to.”
Once we were alone, he invited us into his office.
“You have nothing to worry about,” he said when he noticed how uneasy I was.
Mia walked in first. The room was spacious, with enormous windows overlooking the city, elegant furniture, and hardly any personal touches.
“This room is missing something,” she announced.
Adrian raised an eyebrow. “Is it?”
“A flower. Maybe a rose. Then it wouldn’t look so sad.”
For the first time, I saw my boss smile with genuine warmth.
I sat down, still embarrassed. “I’m sorry about what she said. Mia doesn’t understand yet that some questions are personal.”
“Maybe she understands feelings better than the rest of us,” he replied.
His words touched me more than I expected.
For three years, I had tried to convince everyone that I had everything under control. My former husband, Daniel, had moved away after telling me he loved someone else.
Our marriage hadn’t ended in one dramatic moment. It had slowly unraveled through repeated absences, unfinished conversations, and promises that were never kept. Mia was only three when Daniel left.
He still called her and sent gifts, usually on Sundays. But the everyday work of raising her, managing our problems, and hiding my sadness had fallen to me.
“Mommy always says everything is fine,” Mia said.
“And what do you think?” Adrian asked.
“I think she says that so I won’t worry.”
I lowered my eyes.
Adrian didn’t press me. Instead, he asked Mia if she was hungry. A few minutes later, his assistant, Clara, brought lunch for the three of us.
“You didn’t have to do that,” I said.

“Probably not,” he replied. “But we can take a few minutes to eat together.”
Mia tucked into her meal while I slowly began to relax.
Then she asked another question.
“Adrian, do you have any children?”
“No.”
“Do you live with anyone?”
“I live alone.”
She thought about that for a moment. “Maybe you’d like to have someone to eat dinner with, too.”
He looked surprised. Something shifted in his expression, as if her words had brought an old memory to mind. I suddenly wondered whether there was a loneliness behind his polished, confident exterior that no one else could see.
“Mommy wants the people she loves to stay with her,” Mia added.
My throat tightened.
“Sweetheart, why would you say that?”
“Because the other night you were looking at pictures of Daddy, and you looked sad.”
I froze.
A few days earlier, I had found an old box filled with photographs from our wedding, memories from our life together, and a letter from Daniel that I had never received in person. I had read it several times, trying to understand what might have gone wrong.
I had no idea Mia had been watching me.
“Do you miss Daddy?” she asked.
I gently stroked her hair. “Sometimes I miss the family I imagined we would be.”
“But Daddy loves me, doesn’t he?”
“Of course he does, sweetheart.”
“Then why doesn’t he come back and live with us?”
I had been searching for an answer to that question for a long time.
“Adults sometimes make difficult decisions,” I told her. “None of it is your fault, and it isn’t your job to fix their problems.”
Mia nodded slowly. Adrian let the silence settle between us.
When she returned to her food, he leaned toward me.
“Elena, you don’t have to talk about your personal life. But if you need a more flexible schedule, we can work something out.”
I stared at him in surprise. “Why would you do that?”
“Because you’re a person, Elena—not just an employee.”
I wasn’t used to being offered kindness without having to ask for it.
For a moment, I thought the difficult morning might end peacefully.
Then Adrian mentioned Daniel.
“Mia told me her conversations with her father have become shorter lately.”
I sighed. It was true. For the past few weeks, Daniel had seemed distracted and often ended their calls sooner than usual. I had assumed he was pulling away again.
“Maybe he’s going through a difficult time,” Adrian suggested.
“Or maybe he’s simply chosen a different life.”
“You can’t know unless you speak with him.”
I was about to answer when my phone vibrated inside my bag. An unfamiliar number appeared on the screen.
After a brief hesitation, I answered.
“Hello?”
“Good morning. Is this Elena Hart?”
“Yes, speaking.”
“My name is Thomas Vale. I’m an attorney, and I’m calling about Daniel.”
I stood up immediately. “What happened?”
“Daniel asked me to prepare some arrangements concerning your daughter’s care and future.”
My eyes moved to Mia, who was showing Adrian her stuffed elephant.
“I don’t understand. Why now?”
The man hesitated. “I think Daniel should explain that to you himself.”
“Where is he?”
“He’s currently in the hospital. He was admitted two days ago.”
I gripped the back of my chair. “Is it serious?”
“I can’t share medical details, but he wants to speak with you. He’s just afraid of how you’ll react.”
“Why didn’t he tell me?”
There was a pause.
“Because there’s something he never told you.”
My heart began to pound.
Adrian noticed my distress and quietly took Mia over to the window.
“What has he never told me?” I asked.
The lawyer’s answer made everything I thought I knew feel uncertain.
“Elena, Daniel says the real reason for your separation isn’t what you’ve always believed.”
“What does that mean?”
“He asked me to tell you something very clearly: he didn’t leave you because he had fallen in love with another woman.”
I couldn’t speak.
For three years, I had tried to accept the story I’d been given. Now, it might not even be true.
“Then why did he leave us?”
Before the lawyer could answer, the call dropped.
I stood there with the phone still in my hand while Mia laughed softly by the window.
Had Daniel lied to me all these years?
And what truth had he been trying to hide?
